ACORNS
acorns

i’m here to tell a story, of acorns and of life
and how both should be cherished
no matter how weathered and damaged

i married a minuteman to keep the town happy
but i fell in love with a milkmaid instead
and together we gathered our hands full of acorns
and planted them in a clearing we found

though she was betrothed, her heart she said was mine
and we promised each other we’d live for this
and we did

i married a minuteman to keep the town happy
but i fell in love with a milkmaid instead
and together we gathered our hands full of acorns
and planted them in a clearing we found

as per expectation, she produced and heir
and we promised each other we’d live for this child
and we did
we took her to the forest, and we taught her all we knew
and we showered our baby with pinwheels and pastries
and love

i married a minuteman to keep the town happy
but i fell in love with a milkmaid instead
and together we gathered our hands full of acorns
and planted them in a clearing we found

[interlude]

then one day his anger, was too much for her to bear
so she lifted her wrist and he bludgeoned her there
with his fist
i found her in the clearing, where she stumbled to her death
and i covered her body with linen and lace and then
laid her to rest

i married a minuteman to keep the town happy
but i fell in love with a milkmaid instead
and together we gathered our hands full of acorns
and planted them in a clearing we found

and we watched our love grow
in silence and solitude
every breath was a blessing
every blessing a rose
and we counted our roses
and took none for granted
and though they have thorns
we still hold them tight

and though my love is gone now
her spirit still remains
in the eyes of our daughter
grows taller and taller
each day

i married a minuteman to keep the town happy
but i fell in love with a milkmaid instead

AND WE WILL RAISE

When I was a child, I thought I could fly
Took myself up to the roof to try
But fear got the best of me so I came down
Since then I’ve kept both of my feet on the ground

Once I knew a gentleman
He showed me the world in the palm of his hand
Took me to Vegas to see the lights
We danced under a starry night

And we will raise our children here
We’ll watch the leaves throughout the year
And when they fall we’ll rake them up
performing our tasks without a sound
we’ll bury our secrets in the street
Follow the wind and find the breeze
we will plant the trees
we’ll ride our bikes and scrape our knees

FLIMSY FLOORBOARDS

The first snow falls, like a glaze of porcelain
So draw the drapes, sew the sweaters together
in a blanket, so your feelings can stay warm

I can’t escape the gravity of separation, of separation

Cause the flimsy floorboards cannot support us
Your eyes meet mine as we fall through the forest
Of seasons past love not meant to last

I’m not sure about the heart
It tends to fuck people over
But yours is good, and your words are truthful
You’ll learn to love another in my stead

I can’t escape the gravity of separation, of separation

Cause the fimsy floorboards cannot support us
Your eyes meet mine as we fall through the forest
Of seasons past love not meant to last

[interlude]

My fortune lies
beneath the stars
but no constellation
is consolation

Cause the fimsy floorboards cannot support us
Your eyes meet mine as we fall through the forest
Of seasons past love not meant to last

LOVE SONG

fog rises faster after a violent storm
storm that will leak through the holes in the
roof that we fixed last fall
after your mother called
you and i, i can feel your
skin beneath my fingertips
as i run them down your back
down to the edge of the lake, i will
call to you in symphony
cry with you in sympathy
wake with the sun as it hits your lips
they kiss like fantasy
heal my wounds and calm the sea
wait for the summer and, we will
see what the weather brings
weathered hearts will always flee
flee to the edge of the lake, i will
call to you in symphony
cry with you in sympathy
wake with the sun as it hits your lips

[interlude]

then when i see you after a thousand years
you will not have aged at
all of the clouds that loom over lover’s beds
beds where we laid in the shade, and we
saved the moments that we made,
made the love we had today
wait for tomorrow and, we will
see what the weather brings
aching hearts will always flee
flee to the edge of the lake, i will
call to you in symphony
cry with you in sympathy
wake with the sun as it hits your lips

MIDNIGHT COMES
midnightcomes
Midnight comes and she is waking, she’s here to save us from ourselves
She has a daughter she calls April, who follows her like a shadow

Midnight comes and she is waking, she’s here to save us from ourselves
She has a daughter she calls April, who follows her like a shadow

Her shame compels her service, her crime has given her purpose
But if we dare to take it away, could we dare take it away

And then one day we will destroy her, for fear of the mark that she bears
And little April, she will vanish, but follow us like a shadow

We’ll rise up in her name, my girls don’t be afraid
Your strength will bring salvation, your strength will bring salvation

[interlude]

Midnight comes and we are waking, we’ve brought this curse upon ourselves
The destinies of all our daughters have been lost unto the night

She’ll haunt you in your sleep, make you sweat in your sheets
And that’s the price we pay, and that’s the price we pay

Midnight comes and she is waking, she’s here to save us from ourselves
She has a daughter she calls April, who follows her like a shadow

MORTON SALT GIRL

I’m in love with the morton salt girl
I know I shouldn’t be
But she looks so cute in her little yellow boots
That I want her all for me

I met her at the corner store
Her umbrella was broke
She was getting soaked
So I took her home for tea

Yellow dress
Golden locks
Long white socks
Such sympathy

But she cried at my bed side
Tears of Sa-a-a-a-a-a-lt

I’m in love with the morton salt girl
I know I shouldn’t be
But she looks so cute in her little yellow boots
That I want her all for me

Her mother made her audition
With her modeling skills
She would pay the bills
Though just thirteen years old

Full-page spread
Flash-bulb lights
Sleepless nights
No life for girl

When she left her mother wept
Tears of Sa-a-a-a-a-a-lt

I’m in love with the morton salt girl
I know I shouldn’t be
But she looks so cute in her little yellow boots
That I want her all for me

I saw her on the bus last week
Her yellow dress was torn
Her shiny boots were worn
She wouldn’t look at me

On my knees
I asked her please
To come with me
No reply

But from her eyes to my surprise
Fell tears of Sa-a-a-a-a-a-lt

I’m in love with the morton salt girl
I know I shouldn’t be
But she looks so cute in her little yellow boots
That I want her all for me

WIDOW’S WALK

she’s walking on the rooftop of her father’s house
she wed a young sailor who had not the time to build her a house
she’s waiting for her husband to emerge from the sea
but his body’s being held captive in the belly of a beast
and she’d sing

“where has my sailor gone
why is he taking so long
will he ever return to me
i don’t know”

many moons had passed but she had not a single meal
her appetite was only for the tears that she would shed for her man
her stomach wasn’t large enough to hold all her sorrow
it filled her up and then she drowned in all of her sweet water

As the water touched her lungs
it turned them in to gills

before her skin could peel away
it melted into scales

with nowhere else to go
she took into the ocean
and she swam and she swam til she found a boat
she circled the vessel until she heard
the voice of a sailor she knew

”i’ve been far from home now almost twelve long months
my wife is waiting for me at her father’s house
i was being crushed by the intestines of a monster
but thinking of my lover i grew strong enough to conquer him”

by then he was quite hungry so he cast himself a rope
the hook sunk down and caught his wife in the throat

she thrashed and she thrashed all her heart would allow
but determined as ever he wouldn’t let go
he reeled in his bounty, but still couldn’t see, his wife lay dying at his feet

now we find our fated sailor floating into port
but looking for his wife was just a fruitless search
the sadness was unbearable so he took himself to bed
he sunk into a sleep never to wake again
